Which materials are preferred in EU and US hospitals?
Hospitals in the European Union and the United States do not follow one universal list of “preferred” medical consumable materials. Material selection depends on the product, clinical risk, infection-control policy, regulatory requirements, staff sensitivity, sustainability targets, and purchasing cost.
For suppliers and distributors, the important point is that the same medical consumable may need a different material specification depending on where it will be sold.
Nitrile Is a Strong Choice for Medical Examination Gloves
For examination gloves, nitrile is one of the most widely accepted materials in both EU and US healthcare environments.
In the United States, FDA recognizes nitrile, latex, and vinyl medical examination gloves. CDC guidance notes that latex or nitrile gloves are preferable to vinyl for procedures requiring manual dexterity or more than brief patient contact because vinyl gloves have shown higher failure rates under simulated and clinical conditions.
Nitrile is often selected where the specification requires:
- Latex-free construction
- Good puncture resistance
- Reliable barrier performance
- Comfortable fit
- Compatibility with routine clinical work
Latex gloves are still used where permitted and can provide excellent elasticity and tactile sensitivity. However, latex sensitivity remains an important consideration. FDA specifically recommends synthetic alternatives such as nitrile, PVC, or polyurethane when natural rubber latex allergy is a concern.
For this reason, a distributor targeting hospitals in both regions will often find nitrile easier to position as a general-purpose examination glove material.
Vinyl Is More Suitable for Lower-Risk, Short-Duration Tasks
Vinyl gloves remain available in both markets and are regulated as medical examination gloves in the US.
They may be considered for short-duration tasks where high dexterity, prolonged contact, or higher mechanical resistance is not required.
However, vinyl should not automatically be treated as a direct lower-cost substitute for nitrile in every clinical environment. The intended task matters.
When developing a glove range, it is therefore more practical to separate products by use:
Nitrile: routine clinical examination and higher barrier expectations
Latex: high elasticity where latex use is accepted
Vinyl: shorter and lower-risk applications
This creates a more useful product structure than choosing all gloves on unit price alone.
Polypropylene Nonwovens Remain Common in Disposable Protection
Polypropylene-based nonwoven materials are widely used in disposable healthcare products such as masks, gowns, caps, and protective apparel.
The reason is not simply low material cost. Polypropylene can be processed into different nonwoven structures for different functions, including outer protection, filtration, and fluid management.
For hospital sourcing, the important specification is therefore not simply “PP material.”
Depending on the product, purchasers may need to confirm:
- Spunbond or meltblown construction
- Material weight
- Number of layers
- Filtration requirement
- Fluid resistance
- Seam construction
- Sterility
For example, OSHA guidance identifies polypropylene as an appropriate gown or apron material in certain healthcare chemical-protection settings.
For masks and protective products, performance test results remain more important than choosing the heaviest fabric available.
PVC Is Still Common, but Plasticizer Requirements Need Attention
PVC remains an important medical material because it is flexible, economical, easy to process, and suitable for products such as tubing, bags, and other fluid-handling components.
The material itself has not disappeared from either EU or US hospitals.
The greater issue is the plasticizer used with flexible PVC.
In the EU, medical-device material selection receives particular scrutiny when CMR or endocrine-disrupting substances are present. Under the EU Medical Device Regulation, certain devices containing such substances above 0.1% by weight require justification and specific labeling.
DEHP has historically been widely used as a PVC plasticizer, but European scientific assessments have highlighted exposure concerns, particularly for neonates, infants, and other vulnerable groups.
As a result, when supplying flexible medical consumables for Europe, it is important to confirm:
- Whether the product contains PVC
- Which plasticizer is used
- Whether it is DEHP-free
- Intended patient group
- Duration of exposure
- Required MDR documentation
For US projects, DEHP-free specifications may also be requested depending on the device and application. FDA records include medical devices specifically manufactured with DEHP-free medical-grade polymers, and FDA recall information shows that DEHP-free labeling must accurately match the actual material composition.
TPU, TPE, and Silicone Are Used Where Flexibility Matters
For some cuffs, tubing, connectors, and flexible components, hospitals or medical brands may specify TPU, TPE, silicone, or other polymer systems instead of conventional PVC.
These materials are usually selected for a particular performance reason, such as:
- Softer contact
- Repeated flexibility
- Reduced plasticizer concerns
- Kink resistance
- Specific biocompatibility requirements
They are generally more expensive than basic PVC formulations, so they should not automatically be treated as the “better” material.
The correct choice depends on how long the product is used, whether it contacts the patient directly, whether fluids pass through it, and whether the product is disposable or designed for longer service.
EU Orders Usually Require More Attention to Chemical Composition
One practical difference between EU and US sourcing is the level of attention given to substances in medical-device materials.
The EU MDR has explicit requirements covering CMR and endocrine-disrupting substances in certain devices, including justification and labeling requirements above specified thresholds.
This means an EU quotation may require more detailed information about:
- Plasticizers
- Latex content
- Restricted substances
- Patient-contact materials
- Biocompatibility
- Material declarations
For the US, the focus is often strongly connected to FDA device classification, recognized standards, performance testing, labeling, and intended use. FDA, for example, recognizes specific ASTM standards for nitrile, PVC, latex, and other medical glove materials.
Material Preference Should Be Confirmed Before Quotation
When supplying hospitals, distributors, or medical brands in Europe and the United States, material should be confirmed at the beginning of the project.
A useful RFQ should specify:
- Destination market
- Intended medical use
- Material preference
- Latex-free requirement
- DEHP-free requirement, where relevant
- Sterile or non-sterile
- Applicable standard
- Required test reports
- Packaging and labeling requirements
