Powder-free vs powdered gloves: procurement considerations
When sourcing medical gloves, “powder-free” and “powdered” may appear to be a simple product option. In practice, the choice affects regulatory acceptance, clinical use, contamination control, user comfort, storage, and market access.
For hospitals, clinics, distributors, and medical supply companies, the correct specification should be decided before quotation rather than left as a minor packaging detail.
Why Powder Was Used in Medical Gloves
Powder was historically added to latex and other medical gloves to make donning easier. It reduced friction between the glove and the skin, which was particularly useful when gloves had tackier internal surfaces.
The disadvantage is that the powder does not remain only inside the glove. During donning and removal, particles can become airborne or transfer to hands, equipment, wounds, or the surrounding work area.
For medical applications, those risks eventually became more important than the convenience of easier donning.
In the United States, the FDA banned powdered surgeon’s gloves, powdered patient examination gloves, and absorbable powder used to lubricate surgical gloves. The ban became effective in January 2017 because the agency determined that powdered medical gloves created an unreasonable and substantial risk of illness or injury.
That makes powder-free construction the practical starting point for medical glove procurement in the US.
Powder-Free Does Not Mean the Glove Is Untreated
One common misunderstanding is that a powder-free glove is simply manufactured without adding powder.
Modern powder-free gloves usually require another method to reduce surface tack and make donning practical.
Depending on the glove material and manufacturing process, this may involve chlorination or polymer surface treatment.
This matters during supplier comparison because two powder-free gloves can feel very different even when they use the same base material.
Points worth checking include:
- Ease of donning
- Inner surface feel
- Grip
- Tackiness
- Hand comfort during extended wear
- Residual surface treatment
- Compatibility with the intended clinical task
For high-volume procurement, these practical differences are better evaluated through samples than through the words “powder-free” alone.

Historically, powder-free production could involve additional processing, which contributed to a price difference.

Before a bulk order, check whether the selected glove can be donned comfortably under the intended working conditions.

- Fit around fingers and palm
- Grip
- Tactile sensitivity
- Comfort after longer wear
